Week One: The first essay speaks to the idea of being
comfortable in your own skin. This man explained how he was self-conscience
about a few things and after his experience he felt more comfortable with
himself. The first essay also speaks to the idea of culture. Just because
someone is of a different race or ethnicity of your own does not make him
or her any worse or better than you are. The second essay speaks to the idea of
identity in a very interesting way. In the essay it is discussed how people, as
well as their personalities "are merely the masks we wear in
response to the social situations in which we find ourselves." After
thinking about this idea, I began to believe it was true as well. I had never
thought about this idea before. This essay also talks about
using the Internet as a type of mask. You can make up things and events
that did not actually happen in your life and people would believe them because
they have never met you. The third essay definitely
speaks to the idea of identity. It talks about how people are so caught up in
appearances and based on assumption will think someone is scary, crazy,
etc solely on their looks without getting to know them. In this essay
the writer discusses the differences between Chester, New York and Chicago. He
talks about the ways people act in the three places. He discusses the different
cultures in New York. He talks about Manhattan, Soho as well as Brooklyn and
shares his different experiences within the three different cultures.
The quote that I believe sums up a important concept is a
quote from the third essay. I believe this quote is a great example of how
people judge other people based on their looks and not on their personalities. " My
first victim was a woman--white, well-dressed, probably in her late twenties. I
came upon her late one evening on a deserted street in Hyde Park, a relatively affluent neighborhood
in an otherwise mean, impoverished section of Chicago. As I swung onto the
avenue behind her, there seemed to be a discreet, uninflammatory distance between
us. Not so. She cast back a worried glance. To her, the youngish black man--a
broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved
into the pockets of a bulky military jacket--seemed menacingly close."
Week Two: In the first video culture
impacts personal identity by doing what previous generations have done before
the current generation. The poet talks about
how people do what they are taught, what they see their elders doing and what
they know. A lot of people don't change their habits. In
this video the poet describes that it is difficult to reject one's own culture
because she sees her mother and other female elders doing something so she also
feels obligated to act like them as well. It is hard to change when everyone
around you is not changing as well. In the second video the speaker talks about
how people have very very repetitive days and everyone has them. I agree with
the speaker almost completely. My days are very much like this. Wake up, eat
breakfast, go to practice, go to class, go home, do homework while having a
snack, watch some tv, go to dinner and then go to sleep. Children are have
these ideas ingrained in their heads that they need to get great grades
and go to the best college they can get into that way they can get the best job
and or go to the best graduate school. That is the culture or at least the
culture i grew up in. Although i do agree with this video it made me realize
how boring peoples lives can be and that change is a very good thing. In the
third reading it talks about how habits are hard to change because the people
you surround yourself with may think it will change you completely and
alter the way you do specific things. When people are constantly telling you
not to change it is very hard to change.

This article is a whole
different view on public school. It talks about the advantages of public school
instead of the disadvantages.
Week Four: Although I have cited
sources many times for a lot of different papers I still find it difficult to
do. I always feel that each professor likes their students to cite differently
and with all of the differences I get confused as to how to do it. I think
citing some sources that are found online can be difficult. It is sometimes
hard finding every single bit of information needed whereas is books it is
always clearly presented.
